HHF 2022 maple updates - Week Two
Its been a roller coaster this week - cold weather, warm weather, frozen lines, full throttle sap production, broken pumps, lots of sap hauling, more repairs… phew. Considering its only a 2 month harvest season at best, we work very long days when the weather is right. Tyler has been up and going at 4am and hasn’t finished till after supper. Van has been hauling sap. We’ve also been fortunate enough to have Brendan home for spring break, and he’s been busy checking lines and fixing leaks.
I’m writing this on Saturday morning with a ‘bomb cyclone’ storm rolling in. The forecast has us starting above freezing and dropping throughout the day with 6+ inches of snow expected. Over the last 24 hours, we’ve collected around 6,000 gallons of sap. Boiling started at the sugarhouse by 9am this morning, and we could have a day that yields close to 100 gallons of maple syrup! To give you perspective, our season goal is 1,000 gallons.
We are open at the sugarhouse today from 10am till 4:30pm. It’ll be a big production day, and lucky visitors will get a chance to taste the fresh maple syrup. If you do travel, please be careful as road conditions deteriorate. Sunday will bring colder temperatures, and we may not have the sap for an active boil. We still plan to be open though!
It’s going to be a slow day for visitors due to the weather, but it gives a chance to catch up from the chaotic week and focus on maple production. If you make it here, it’ll be a great opportunity to get a more immersive experience on maple production. We’ll be bottling up fresh syrup all day long too!
We’re in the heart of maple season now. Don’t forget that NH Maple Weekend celebrations are scheduled for March 19th & 20th. During that weekend, we typically offer extra maple goodies and samples. The weather will dictate boiling times, but we’re here every weekend to give you tours, samples and operate the shop. The shelves are stocked with fresh Maple Syrup in plastic jugs or glass. We have a replenished supply of Maple Cream, Candy, and Sugar. A large selection of our homegrown Grass Fed Beef is in our shop freezer. Get it while it lasts. See you soon!
